Why can't I fast forward or rewind an audio track with Windows Media Player 11?

The on that you would normally use to search through a song disappears until i move the mouse over top of where it's supposed to be, then it reappears but it's at the start of the song and I can't move it, but when I try to it just starts the song over again, and I can't skip throughout the song I'm playing.
