I have a 1991 plymouth laser. When it starts its fine, then few mins it will try to die till i rev it up why?

Its fine for a couple of mins, then it tries to die till i rev up the motor then its fine again. i think my fuel guage is messed up might not have enough gas, but i dont know. please help?
