What "punishments" do you use for your 2 year old?

My son threw such a fit today when I told him we had to get in the car. Dad and I took him to get ice cream and play on the playground but dad had a migrane so we only played for five minutes or so. After we tried to do this for him to be nice and change it up he screamed and yelled at me and threw a fit. Usually I can stay calm and rationalize with him or whisper something in his ear and he will calm, but not today. I took him home and put him straight to bed. I've put him in bed before when he gets up from time out too much and he'll scream and beat on his door. I ask him if hes all done and he calms and finishes time in time out. Today I told him he had to go to bed and he got really upset because I said being "all done" is too late and he had to go to bed now. What do you do in situations like this...or in others when fits overtake any possibility of being rational? makes him want to hit me so thats pretty much out
